Two cowboys rode the Chisholm Trail
Both men tough, sure and true
But one had a smile and was joyful
While the other rather surly and blue

"I hate this stinking trail
And all this choking dust
Looking at the back end of cattle
Just makes a man want to cuss"

"Better than that storm last night
With the wind, lightning and rain
I chased the strays almost to Denver
Across the Oklahoma plain"

"This old hoss is an ornery critter
Bet he'll quit before we're through"

"Reckon it's better than walking
Ain't this fresh water we're coming to"

"It's still a good long way to Kansas
Hope we keep our hair"

"Look at how far we've come already
Bet my girl's waiting there"

They rode the Chisholm trail
Putting up with all the same adversities
But one looked for the brighter side
And the other for the tragedies

They both had the same tough life
And knew living was real hard
One cursed the days he lived
While the other thanked the Lord
