Black
“Get on the horse”
Is all he would say
“Just ride the brute,
That’s your job today”

The pony weren’t so big
But they called him an outlaw
Black with a white diamond
Not so broad or so tall

No one had ridden him yet
Everyone had gotten the chance
Some got really busted up
When the stallion started his dance

Standing in the corral
He didn’t look like much
But El Diablo Negron
Had more than enough stuff

Four strappin’ young cowboys
Got him all tied down
Slipped a saddle on his back
Waitin’ for him to spin around

He put a foot in the stirrup
They let go of the ropes
Got his bottom on the saddle
To stay on his biggest hope

Black snorted, pawing the red dust
Lowered his head, pinned back his ears
The cowboy tightened up the reins
Then came the explosion he had feared

His hindquarters went up higher than the barn roof
The cowboy relaxed and leaned way back
Then the killer plopped down and reared back up
His passenger countered, taking up the slack
The horse started toppling backwards
But the rider leaned hard on his neck
He came down hard with both front feet
Avoiding one terrible wreck

The stallion spun and wove and tried to roll
The cowboy held on and drove the horse’s nose
To the left when he went right, then the other way
He rode the sashaying critter like a runaway fire hose

Black bucked and jumped then headed for the fence
His rider stayed with him as if he were nailed on
But when the stallion crawled up the gate
The horseman thought for sure he was gone

He was about top dismount when he said a prayer
“Let me walk away from this one Lord,
Don’t care about me reputation or pride”
The outlaw cleared the gate and landed real hard

Came down on the other side
Going down to his very knees
With the cowboy still aboard
Wondering how that could be

Got to his feet, looking all around
Trotted the outside the round pin
Stopped at the wooden water tank
Stuck his black face full in

The cowboy let him take a long drink
As the onlookers started to clap
Rode the old devil around the pin
In a well-deserved victory lap

Now when things are going real bad
Doing the things we all gotta do
Don’t forget the power of prayer
To rescue us and get us through
